A Fall Refresh Designed to Spark Creativity at Refraction

What if the space you worked in actually made you feel more creative the moment you walked through the door?

Spruce Decor + Style (Spruce) partnered with Refraction Innovation Hub (Refraction) in Tysons Corner, Virginia to bring subtle but impactful fall decor to their co-working space that created a more inspiring place to build, gather, and create.

The Challenge

Inside Refraction Innovation Hub, startups are being built, ideas are being tested, and community events bring people together week after week. The energy is high, collaborative but the physical environment wasn’t keeping up.

Like many nonprofit organizations, Refraction operates with:

  • A small, highly focused team
  • Limited storage space
  • Priorities centered on programming and community

Seasonal updates typically require extra time and resources, and without a clear system, they often fall to the bottom of the list.

The result? A missed opportunity to shape how the space feels the moment someone walks in.

The Spruce Approach

We aimed to shift the feeling of Refraction's space.

Spruce introduced a fall refresh designed to be noticed the moment someone walked through the door. Subtle seasonal touches brought warmth and intention into the space without disrupting how it functioned day to day.

The focus was on elevating the areas that mattered most:

  • Entry points where first impressions are formed
  • Common spaces where members gather and connect
  • Flexible areas used for meetings and collaboration

Layered textures, warm tones, and thoughtfully placed accents created a backdrop that felt more inviting and more aligned with the energy of the community.

And because Spruce handled everything—from sourcing and styling to installation and post-season removal—the Refraction team didn’t have to manage a single detail or store a single item.

The moment people walked in, the space felt warmer and more inspiring.

Common areas became places people wanted to stay, conversations lingered longer, and collaboration became more natural. The environment supported the kind of creative thinking the space was designed for.

And behind the scenes, the operational burden disappeared entirely without the shopping, storage constraints, or setup time that comes with traditional decorating.
